Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh
Bara Imambara, also known as Asafi Imambara, is one of the most famous monuments in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784. The Imambara is a significant architectural marvel of the Nawabi era, featuring a unique design without any supporting beams or pillars in its central hall. The complex includes the main Imambara, the famous Bhulbhulaiya (labyrinth), and the Asafi Mosque, making it one of the most visited heritage sites in Lucknow and a symbol of the city's rich cultural and architectural heritage.
Bara Imambara was constructed as a part of a famine relief project by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula, the fourth Nawab of Awadh. The construction provided employment to thousands of people during a severe famine, and the unique architectural design without beams or pillars in the central hall remains an engineering marvel. The complex was built to serve as a congregation hall for Shia Muslims during Muharram and other religious observances, reflecting the syncretic culture of Awadh.
