India Gate is a 42-meter-high war memorial arch located on the eastern edge of the ceremonial axis of New Delhi, along Rajpath. Originally called the All-India War Memorial, it was designed by architect Sir Edwin Lutyens and commemorates the 74,187 Indian soldiers who died in World War I and the Third Anglo-Afghan War. The monument stands as a symbol of national pride and sacrifice, attracting millions of visitors annually. The Amar Jawan Jyoti (Flame of the Immortal Soldier) was added later to honor soldiers who died in the 1971 Indo-Pak War.
India Gate was built between 1921 and 1931 as a memorial to the Indian soldiers who served in the British Indian Army during World War I. The names of over 13,000 soldiers are inscribed on the monument. The structure is inspired by the Arc de Triomphe in Paris and serves as a prominent landmark in the heart of New Delhi. The surrounding area, including the lawns and fountains, has been developed as a public space for recreation and national celebrations.
