Jogeshwari Caves are ancient rock-cut caves located in the Jogeshwari suburb of Mumbai. These caves are among the earliest examples of Hindu cave temple architecture in India and are primarily dedicated to Lord Shiva. Visitors come to explore their historical importance, architectural layout, and religious relevance, making them a significant yet lesser-known heritage site in the city.


History & Background

The Jogeshwari Caves are believed to date back to around the 6th century CE. Carved from basalt rock, the caves exhibit a mix of Shaiva and early Brahmanical influences. The main sanctum features a lingam, while surrounding chambers and pillars reflect early experimentation in cave temple design that later influenced more elaborate structures across India.
