Rumi Darwaza, also known as the Turkish Gate, is an iconic gateway located in Lucknow, Uttar Pradesh, built by Nawab Asaf-ud-Daula in 1784. The magnificent gateway stands as one of the most recognizable symbols of Lucknow and is considered a masterpiece of Awadhi architecture. Standing at a height of 60 feet, Rumi Darwaza was inspired by a similar gateway in Constantinople (Istanbul) and showcases the architectural grandeur of the Nawabi era, making it one of the most photographed landmarks in Lucknow.

History & Background

Rumi Darwaza was constructed as part of the same famine relief project that led to the building of Bara Imambara. The gateway was built to serve as an entrance to the old city of Lucknow and was inspired by the Sublime Porte (Bab-i-Humayun) in Constantinople. The name "Rumi" refers to the Eastern Roman Empire (Byzantine Empire), and the gateway stands as a symbol of the cultural connections between different parts of the Islamic world during the Nawabi period.
