Mattancherry Palace, also known as the Dutch Palace, is a historic palace located in Mattancherry, Kochi. Built by the Portuguese in 1555 and later renovated by the Dutch in 1663, the palace is renowned for its exquisite Kerala-style architecture and stunning mural paintings depicting scenes from the Ramayana and other Hindu epics. The palace served as the residence of the Cochin Rajas and stands as a remarkable example of Indo-European architectural fusion.
The palace was originally constructed by the Portuguese as a gift to Veera Kerala Varma, the Raja of Cochin, as a gesture of goodwill. However, it was the Dutch who extensively renovated and maintained the palace, leading to its popular name 'Dutch Palace'. The palace complex includes a temple dedicated to the royal deity, Pazhayannur Bhagavathi, and features elaborate mural paintings that are among the finest examples of Kerala's traditional art.
