Hyderabad, Telengana
Golconda Fort is a historic fortified citadel and one of the most prominent landmarks in Hyderabad, Telangana. Originally built during the Kakatiya dynasty in the 12th century and later expanded by the Qutb Shahi dynasty in the 16th century, the fort served as the capital of the Qutb Shahi kingdom until 1590. The fort is renowned for its impressive architecture, acoustic engineering, and historical significance, particularly its association with the famous Koh-i-Noor and Hope diamonds. Located on a granite hill, the fort complex spans approximately 11 kilometers and features multiple gates, palaces, mosques, and water systems.
The fort's name is derived from the Telugu words 'Golla Konda' meaning 'Shepherd's Hill'. It was initially a mud fort under the Kakatiya dynasty and was later fortified with granite by the Bahmani Sultanate and Qutb Shahi rulers. The fort reached its zenith under the Qutb Shahi dynasty, becoming a center of diamond trade and Islamic culture. The Mughal emperor Aurangzeb captured the fort in 1687 after an eight-month siege, leading to the decline of the Qutb Shahi dynasty.
