Charminar is an iconic monument and the most recognizable symbol of Hyderabad, Telangana. Built in 1591 by Muhammad Quli Qutb Shah, the fifth ruler of the Qutb Shahi dynasty, Charminar was constructed to commemorate the end of a deadly plague that had ravaged the city. The name 'Charminar' means 'Four Minarets' in Urdu, referring to the four grand arches and minarets that characterize the monument. Located in the heart of the old city, Charminar serves as a major landmark and is surrounded by a bustling market area, making it one of the most visited tourist attractions in Hyderabad.
Charminar was built at the intersection of the historical trade route connecting the Golconda markets with the port city of Machilipatnam.
