Arthuna Temples Complex is a magnificent cluster of ancient Hindu and Jain temples located in the town of Arthuna, approximately 55 km from Banswara. Once the flourishing capital of the Paramara rulers of Vagada (11th-12th century AD), known then as Utthunaka, the site is now a treasure trove of architectural heritage. The complex comprises over a dozen temples, including the famous Mandaleshwar Mahadev Temple (built in 1079 AD) and the Hanuman Garhi group. These temples are renowned for their intricate stone carvings, elaborate pillars, and the fusion of Maha-Maru and Maru-Gurjara architectural styles, reflecting the artistic zenith of the Paramara era.
Mandaleshwar Mahadev: The most prominent temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva, standing on a high platform with a well-preserved Shikhar and an inscription dating back to King Chamundaraja.
Hanuman Garhi Complex: Houses the Nilkanth Mahadev temple, Kumbheshwar temple, and a colossal black stone statue of Lord Hanuman.
Jain Temples: Several Jain shrines in the vicinity showcase delicate carvings similar to the Dilwara temples of Mount Abu.
Chaunsath Yogini Temple: A rare shrine dedicated to the 64 Yoginis, adding a tantric historical layer to the site.
Arthuna was a major political and cultural center for the Paramaras of Malwa. The ruins and standing structures bear testimony to a golden age of art and religion where Shaivism, Jainism, and Shaktism co-existed and flourished. The site is often referred to as the "Khajuraho of Vagad" due to the richness of its sculptures.
Preservation: Many structures are protected monuments. Visitors must not touch or deface the ancient carvings.
Footwear: Remove shoes before entering the active shrines within the complex.
Exploration: Allow at least 2-3 hours to fully explore the scattered temple groups.

Road Access: Connected by a two-lane road; private taxis or buses to Garhi/Arthuna are available.
State transport buses ply regularly between Banswara and Arthuna. Hiring a private taxi for a day trip is recommended for convenience. Mobile network coverage is generally available in the town area.
The winter months (October to March) are the most comfortable for exploring the open-air complex. The site also comes alive during Shivratri and Holi, when local fairs are held.
