Hawa Mahal, also known as the Palace of Winds, is one of the most iconic landmarks of Jaipur and a symbol of the Pink City. Built in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the five-story palace features a unique honeycomb-like structure with 953 small windows (jharokhas) decorated with intricate latticework. The palace was designed to allow royal women to observe street festivals and daily life without being seen, as they had to observe purdah. The red and pink sandstone structure creates a stunning facade that has become synonymous with Jaipur's architectural heritage.
Hawa Mahal was constructed in 1799 by Maharaja Sawai Pratap Singh, the grandson of Maharaja Sawai Jai Singh II. The palace was designed by Lal Chand Ustad in the form of Lord Krishna's crown, reflecting the Maharaja's devotion. The unique design allowed cool air to flow through the palace, giving it the name "Palace of Winds." The structure was built as an extension of the City Palace complex.
