History & Background

Chetpet Lake has been transformed from a traditional water body into a modern eco-park through government initiatives. In 2016, the Tamil Nadu government initiated the development of Chetpet Lake into an eco-tourism spot, creating various recreational facilities and amenities. The project included the creation of a 1.4-kilometer walking track around the lake, boating facilities, an open-air auditorium, a children's park, a seafood court, and a multi-level car parking facility. In March 2025, the Chennai Metropolitan Development Authority (CMDA) announced a ₹20.17 crore redevelopment plan for the 16-acre Chetpet Eco Park, aiming to introduce new water sports, a musical fountain, bird-viewing decks, improved walkways, and renovated structures with sustainable features to enhance water management and ecological balance.
